Used to be this time of year turkey shoots where being put on everywhere. Churchs, civic groups and VFW's always had them but these days they seem to be few and far between.
When I was a little kid I used to think that everybody just shot the turkeys right then and there. Didn't seem very sporting to me .

I don't know why.
Maybe the liberals are taking over our society and pressuring everybody else to stop having anything to do with guns or shooting, no matter how "sporting" and "traditional" it may be.

Maybe we gun owners have become less interested in sport shooting, and we amass collections of combat guns. Instead of thinking about bagging game with a long-barreled shotgun, too many of us are only interested in tactical shotguns with ghost ring sights, cylinder bore barrels, with 8-shot extended mags and side-saddle shell holders.

Maybe Americans today are uncomfortable being outside, and we prefer to shoot our ducks on a Nintendo game system. Maybe we like talking about guns on the internet more than actually putting them to use.

Anyhow, I'm glad my local VFW post in Cumming still holds its turkey shoots every year in October thru December, and I will get up there one Saturday to hand-over $5 or $10 to take a shot or two.
Sometimes I bring my own gun, and sometimes I use one of the loaners that other kind folks have brought and allow visitors to use. One year, I won a full rack of beef ribs.
