I don’t think its squirrels. Now they are in the front yard also.

What kind of critter digs 3 inch holes 3 inches deep? Armadillos?

Armadillo....lil %r's. They have invaded.
Squirrel or Squirrelinas as I call them . IMO
To hide "DEEZE NUTS " Of -Course . LOL
I have seen an armadillo in the yard at night so they are a suspect.
Catch them early before they nest by your home.

Yeah that’s Armadillo damage.
They eat their weight in bugs a month… best practice is to get some of the yard granules and use it regularly to keep the bugs out of the grass and they will not root up your yard anymore.
You remove the food source and they will move onto your neighbors yard.
