What newish round will be tomorrows classic?

.300 blackout is pointless if not suppressed, and then it has the effectiveness of a .40 S&W pistol round, but I won't belabor that point since it's the flavor of the month.

The answer to the OP's question is "whatever round replaces 5.56 in the standard issue US military battle rifle".

Like you know-- .30-06, .45 ACP, .45-70, .223, .308, .30-40 Krag. (Just kidding.)

Well I'm going to build another AR soon..maybe it's time I give 300blk a try

I (and many others) definitely recommend it for an SBR, especially if you're gonna suppress it. It works great in a 16" AR as well (I've shot it before and loved it) without a suppressor, but many people would say it's hard to justify the higher ammo cost vs 5.56 in that configuration. SBR length and/or suppressed is where the 300 BLK really outshines the competition. Plus, the ammo cost of it is really coming down and it's easy to reload.

.300 blackout subsonic is pointless if not suppressed, and then it has the effectiveness of a .45 ACP pistol round, but I won't belabor that point since it's the flavor of the month.

FTFY. Agreed, shooting SUBSONIC 300 blk without a suppressor is pretty much pointless, but not supersonic. A round like the 110 gr Barmes TSX will beat 5.56 any day of the week in any barrel length.

Well, I don't want to hijack the thread, but a subsonic 175 gr. bullet is more similar to .40 than .45 ACP. May be more similar to 10mm, but the diameter is smaller and the bullets aren't designed to expand at that low speed. So it's likely LESS effective on human/deer size targets than the pistol rounds. Someone needs to design a 175 gr. thin-jacket SP for .300 BLK, but as far as I know, no one has as of yet. And the typical twist rates (that I've seen, but I'm no expert) won't stabilize the 220-240 gr. bullets, which are the ones you'd really want to shoot subsonic, though they may not leave enough room in the case for powder.

And the 110 TSX won't penetrate nearly as deeply as an expanding 75 gr. .223 round; the SD is way too low. It may be good enough, but a 150 gr. would be far better. The ballistics of the 110 also suck, beyond a couple of hundred yards. I'm not saying I know of a better option; it's just not clear what is a definite improvement over .223 for the military in the AR platform. For other purposes, .458 SOCOM (I love it when they reinvent the .45-70 and get all excited about it-- happens every decade) and so forth have their uses.

Can you stabilize 110 TSX supersonic and 175 gr. subsonic from the same barrel?

For an SBR, .300 might have advantages, especially suppressed. No argument from me there.
