Whats everybody prepping for?

This kinda highlights it-

http://www.onesecondafter.com/

But mostly I call it being prepared, 10-20 gallons of water, 30 days of food, guns, ammo, medicines, lights, supplies, mostly for a "local" bad episode. About a months salary over 4 yrs, so a weeks paycheck per yr.

If it all falls apart, as the book above documents well, it's over as we know it in this neck of the woods. Not enough game to support us all, not enough chickens or beef to make it past a hard winter. 40% gone in the first 45 days.

Insulin, heart meds, pacemakers, the mental meds, brutal in a hurry.

Just look at Katrina, all the folks living in hotels to this day, compared to the floods up in the midwest that took whole towns, back up and going in no time. Same for the record snowstorms in the midwest, folks were prepared, needed little from the government.

Just do not want to go like sheep to the slaughter..........

We prep because we want to be prepared for a local event (probable), national event (rare) or global event (very small risk). We strongly feel we'll see a major currency failure or financial crisis in the future that results in significant inflation, but we also make sure we have supplies and plans in case of a natural event like an earthquake or pandemic. We're not nuts about it - very low key. On top of that, I am very bothered by the fact that American culture is becoming more and more technology dependent while self sufficiency and generations of shared knowledge gets thrown out the window.

There are any number of things that can happen and have happened throught history. If anything, we are more at risk as a country in certain scenarios than we ever were in the past. Don't be fooled into thinking the last 60-70 years is the status quo.

+1.
The people on the TV all have a "scenario" they are prepping for. While there are certain "scenarios" that may require specific planning, to me it's best to be prepared on a daily basis for whatever happens.
I recall the floods of 94; we did not have clean water to drink for about a week; eating places closed; gas and ice price gouging...we were not prepared then and it sucked. We've lost power in ice storms for days at the time...we had water then but the only food was in the pantry...nothing easy to cook...fireplace was all we had for warmth and cooking...some dehydrated food would have been welcome....
The truth of the matter is anything could happen at any time. It NEVER hurts to be as prepared as you afford to be.

I think alot of folks who were affected by hurricane katrina wished they would have preped a little more.
Them guys were begging for fresh water and food.

I read a story about people in Syria eating grass because they didnt have food from being under seige.

The reason I keep bug out bags is incase anything should happen to make us leave, We are ready to go.
Any number of reasons could force you to evacuate your home.

We stock up on food and water and prepare to stay home but if I cant stay I want to be able to grab a bag with a few items and leave
not take time to pack items.

NYGunguy......sounds like another know it all New York City carpet bagger that has come south in order to impart his wisdom to us on how they do things in The Bronx.

LOL......the best example I can put forth is that a few years back I was out of work for a few months.....I was able to feed myself and my family from my food preps. The money I saved by not buying food was enough to help keep me current on my mortgage and thus not lose my house.
