Whats everybody prepping for?

There will be a breakdown of society. There always has always been such throughout all generations. It is no different now. If you went to the grocery store tommorrow and there was nothing there what would you do? It is as simple as: do you have anything to eat? Nothing today....nothing tommorrow...nothing the next day....or the next. Civilization as we know it ...will mean nothing. I prep to survive.

Nothing wrong with being prepared and planning. We are at a time where disruptions in the food supply, financial services and the infrastructure in general are a real possibility. I like to know that if those things happen I have enough resources to keep my family fed until resources are available once again. We also have many people today that will have no qualms in taking from others, I am prepared to do whatever it takes to stop them from taking from my family what we have stocked up for our survival.

Also, as someone mentioned before, the masses will storm the streets not if, but when, the free ride is over and the economy will not be able to support the free ride many are getting much longer (see Europe). I do not believe it will get out here to me or be a total collapse of society but once again, I will protect my family if it does.

Here's the basic problem ..... like anything else there are a lot of people that take things way to far. You have to find a happy middle where are prepared for rough times but you don't dwell on it and your life isn't consumed with fear of imminent collapse of something. My grandpa used to say that just surviving is no way to live long term. You have to stop and look around at the beauty of life and stop focusing on the bad stuff.

I collect guns and have quite a bit of ammunition for each gun that I own because I like guns and want to be able to continue to shoot them .... period. I have a decent stash of water, water filters and non-perishable food as well ... I'm not planning for the apocalypse or something specific but, the way that I look at it, because I've got these things I'm better off than people that don't. I will say though that I haven't "prepped" for anything on purpose I just buy a lot of stuff like ammo, bottled water cases, dry/canned food (and other food) like this when it's on ridiculously cheap sales/coupon deals and store it. After a short while it kind of builds up by accident more than intention.

well said. we all prepare for something, even if we dont think about it. I think i better start bringing a parachute to work, JIC.

Its hard for me to grasp that being prepared for an emergancy is futile. Why do people buy smoke detectors? In case of a fire. Sure you may live your whole life without having your house burn down but it can still happen.

By extension it's the same as saying why do we apply for permits and carry guns ..... at least in my case it has nothing do do with thinking that I'll need it. If I were ever going somewhere that I thought I would definitely NEED my gun I would simply choose not to go and avoid potential confrontation altogether. It's just like buying an insurance policy for your car ... you don't expect to crash, just like you don't expect some drugged out wacko to attack you or your family, but like lightning striking, it does happen occasionally and it never hurts to have a backup plan when it does.
