What's your realistic dream car?

Yeah, surely. I just don't understand why they want all of that extra weight? The McLaren MP4-12C is a 3.8 liter tt Volvo engine cranking out 618hp. Better fuel economy, and less weight to haul around.
american market different.
not saying you are not right, its just not what the masses want.

Laufen, the viper is modern day american muscle; and american muscle has always been about a rather large engine.
If you threw a single/twin turbo into the viper it would push much more than 618hp.
Another aspect you're over looking that the 8.4L engine produces that those other two cars don't is the torque. (Torque being another standout feature of American muscle).
The 8.4L naturally aspirated engine makes 600+ lb. torque, while the mclaren, even twin turboed, makes considerably less.

Plus, if you're buying a car that costs THAT much, who really cares about getting 10mpg as opposed to 20?
I'm no tree-hugger by any means and I don't think you are either. haha

And even with all that extra torque, it's considerably slower 0-60 than the McLaren.

I digress to what oklford said. They're producing according to the American market. It's American muscle, not exotic supercar.
They're two completely different platform designs we're talking about.
Take the new C7 corvette for example. It's got a 6.2L V8, pushing around 450bhp. Larger engine than the McLaren; much slower. Two different styles, two different markets.
Ultimately, put any form of forced induction on that viper and it would dust the tt Mclaren.

What I don't understand is how are they only getting 640 hp from 8.4liters? That must be an incredibly inefficient engine.

The McLaren is also twice as expensive.... They are VERY different cars. It's almost like comparing a Mustang to a (used) Ferrari. Very different clientele wanting very different things.

They should be able to squeeze much more power out of it though. I will agree with you on that. Give that much displacement to a German engineering team and you would have 800-900 hp I'm sure. Ferrari gets that kind of power out of much less displacement, but as someone else pointed out even the most powerful Ferrari's and McLaren's lack the kind of torque the Viper produces at almost no RPM.

I could be wrong as my experience is dated, but my neighbor's Viper GTS spent MUCH less time in the shop than my uncle's 360 Modena.
