If the shtf this afternoon are you ready? What do you need? What would you have liked to have done differently? Your at work, do you have what you need to make it home to your family?

I ask myself this everyday, and never feel ready. I have the bags, and gear but feel as though it's lacking, and as if I'm lacking in the knowledge I need. I can read all day and night and still feel like I don't know enough. I live really close to chattanooga, any suggestions on where a good place to take some classes around here? Or anyone close by willing to take some time to show my wife and I some skills?

It's not knowledge you need, its practice. You can read and have all the wilderness book knowledge in the world but its not going to help you actually learn how to start a fire with a pair of sticks, with how to trap small game, and simply getting used to being in the field and/or otherwise adapting to living without modern technology. Just like with marksmanship requires throwing lead, you have to just get out there or throw the breakers and cut the water on your house for a whole weekend to really learn what you need to know.

I tend to think that a SHTF event would involve a lot less of making fire from two sticks, snaring small game, and all of that bushcraft.

I think it will require quick movement, ability to enter/scavenge places others cannot, communicate with others, and probably one of the most important and least spoken of in survival forums is the capability to identify threats early, and react to them. Whether they are people, conditions, whatever.

It's safe to say that being able to identify a bad situation because of a tornado, group of marauders, gang rapists, natural gas leak, flood, industrial chemical spill, or starving a-holes is important. The earlier, the better.

The ability to fight, hunker down against elements, hide, or just plain leave, is pretty important I believe.

JamesG and IMaDad, are CORRECT. Practice is what you need to do, such as:

Practice making fires:
Practice putting up Shelters:
Practice identifying Threats:
Practice Weapons USE and Safety:
Practice your food Prep.
This can all be done in your eyes

What skills are you talking about?

What's awesome now a days is that you can learn basically anything on YouTube.

What specifically are you trying to learn?
