Where does it say thay are sailing down the coast?? You are inserting your assumption in this...?
Maybe they were going to Cuba? Maybe they wanted to check out the Bermuda Triangle......??

How do you know they didn't? They didn't run aground, they hit a submerged object. Storm downed trees floating just below the surface are not marked on charts.

Cuba could be an option, but you would have to sail down the coast to get there.
Maybe the Bermuda Triangle was on the itinerary, but they would have to get down the coast and around Florida and into the Atlantic first.
I could see having a boat full of non-perishable food and water, and sailing down the west coast of Florida and back up the east coast. You would gain a lot of experience that way and always be near shore, before venturing out into open water.
Again, there is not enough info in the article to condemn them as complete idiots. I am not saying they aren't, just that there is not enough info.
No nonsense, just reading comprehension and logic. It says they hit an unseen underwater object; not a reef, not an island. Ran aground would imply you had hit "ground".
