I also sent $50 to the Go Fund me asking them to either buy an EPIRB for their next 20 mile jaunt down the coast. Or stay on land and take all the funds and buy matching mopeds...

All the planning in the world goes down the drain when you hit something in the ocean. Lots of people, better equipped, with proper training has needed rescued.
The boat cannot roll over since the bottom is only about 6 - 7 feet deep. This pic is from their now $15K+ gofundme page.
You can see a channel marker bouy in the background and at top left you can make out the shore line with buildings.

Getting super lucky and not dying of your own stupidity doesn't make you smart...they made it less distance in 2 days than people run on foot in marathons, they might as well have been trying to fly to the moon...they never had a snowballs chance in hell. While I think there should've been better planning on their part, at least they have it a shot, which is more than most people have the balls to do. Had they succeeded in doing their trip, would they have still been idiots?
They did put people at risk, rescuers had to come save their stupid asses. They had no idea what they were doing and could just as easily have hit another vessel. We'll just have to agree to disagree. While I may or may not agree with one's actions, as long as it doesn't put innocent people at risk, I'm all about people throwing caution to the wind and going for it. This country wouldn't be here or be where it's at had people just waited around for the right time to do something.
Do not most boats have some type of sonar capabilities? I mean GPS's geared towards boats have them right?
What if their is a 8-10 surf?
