where would you hole up if shtf and you couldnt go very far

Unless you have lived off the land for any period of time I would advise against it, your going to die of exposure or shot because of someone else wanting your stuff. It always amazes me to hear people say "if SHTF I am going up to the mountains and live off the land"...ok well when was the last time you went and spent months living off the land? Have you ever gone camping in the mountains in the middle of winter with only what you can carry? Few too many people have even considered the skills needed much less the mentality needed to survive off the land. Secondly, yes you may have all the skills, equipment, etc to do so....but what happens when the hungry guy who has been watching your camp for the past couple of days decides to take a pop shot when your going #2 or sleeping. Stupid breeds stupid...if your going to hole up anywhere your better off at home.

haha Every time I step outside and smell the fresh air and hear nothing but nature, I feel like I am pretty much set for survival for when the big cities get blown up. The only invaders up here so far are Floridians and to be fair, I invade their beaches now and then.

Agreed..I'd probably just grab a bunch of supplies and move into the thick of the woods behind the house here..close enough that if there's anything else we need we can grab it, but were on a busy highway and not many trees so it'd be an easy target. So if it was targeted and some decided to raid, friends/family/whoever I'm with wont be harmed in the process.

I'm staying home. I'll take my chances here. I have a swimming pool with enough water to last for while as do several of my neighbors. Theres a river not far from us, loads of squirrels and rabbits around here that'd go nice with all The rice and pasta. I love the stuff that just needs boiling water to cook or rehydrate, like those tasty Ramen Noodles, mmmm mmm.
If it ever got too bad many people would commit suicide as opposed to trying to live thru the hardships, there are loads of cars with fuel and batteries, use the fuel in my generator to keep the car batteries charged and use them as power source to keep my food storage cold until the grid came back online, it will. NO ONE in power wants to live like a native or rule a country like ours full of cannibals and dregs. Even if they're holed up in a nice bunker they have no one to boss around and their egos couldn't take it.
Keep my neighbors involved so we can sleep in shifts, look out for each other and our children. The children are the most important so you'd need to find a way to keep them safe and occupied, well fed and educated. Again, that's where your neighbors help is needed. In a 3rd world nation it takes a village to raise a child. Being all by yourself will eventually be a death sentence.
Im guessing you'll see loads of RV camps springing up. The roads to the "mountains" are going to be awfully crowded with all those survivors killing off all the wild life, you'll be hunting each other up there before too long.
Home is where the heart is and my heart is right here with all my comforts and supplies.

The mountains seem to be a common answer for many. My answer is "I'm not quite sure". Most who leave for the mountains to avoid conflict are simply going to find it anyhow. Others will most likely get there before you and do their best to defend their areas. In such a case, "common thoughts" are not particularly a good thing. I don't think venturing would be the wisest thing to do in the beginning but, I doubt that most will be able to bunker for any real length of time. Those who survive the initial chaos of the higher populous will eventually venture to the outskirts and rural areas. Then, you have to worry about raids, etc. Unfortunately, many of us will have little choice but to be mobile. I guess much will depend on time and whether order is ever reestablished.

For me, I think it's best to think outside the box.

you along with thousands and thousands of other people with the same thoughts.everybody thinks there is an unlimited supply of game and things to eat "out in the country" and "up in the mountains".the wild game would be used up in no time,along with most cattle.every person with a gun would be riding/walking around shooting every thing that looked even close to a rabbit,deer,cow,pig,goat Ect.. every garden would picked clean in no time.

I would find the nicest, defendable office building with generators, crystal springs water, and coffee Place will be deserted....because who the hell would want to go in to work when SHTF?? Lol

Seriously though, #1 goal is to get away from the city, period. Of course food, water, and protection should be priority as well.
