Sounds like a very hearty, stick to your ribs kind of dish. Simple too. I bet this would be good on a cold night. I may have to invest in a Sam Club chicken and give this a try. $5 for a rotisserie chicken and $1.50 for half a box of saltines. That's a cheap meal.

If you can find a recipe, it would be best to start with a raw bird.

Sounds like it originated from some bachelor who wanted chicken and dumplings but had no idea how to make them!

I think it was just a way to stretch a little food a long way back in hard times.

Lots of churches and civic groups around Athens/Oconee sell it for fundraising as well.

We used to cook a big wash pot of it down on river in fall. Cook up taters onions a chicken and sometimes throw some deer meat or rabbit in there. Grind it up and put in pot with broth from cooking everything and put in a stick of butter a gallon of milk and couple boxes saltine crackers salt pepper and Texas Pete. A man could hurt hisself eating two or three big bowls of that.
