Windows 10 question

The draw back to Windows 10 is you will no longer "own" the OS, they can and will force updates to you and it will be done via peers not a centralized server from MS, also if they will add on features in the future that if you want to use them there will be a charge for it. The end goal here is to get everyone on it then start charging them for premium services or more of a per month or per year subscription. Most of the current OS's (i.e. Win7, Win8) are still supported for years to come and they really don't like keep up support for them that is another reason for the huge push to get everyone onto Win10. Don't even get me started on all the snooping software pre-installed and how they would have no problems using this to "target market" products to you or hand over to anyone else who offers the right amount of $. Just my option but I think I will hold out until the end and yes I have already convereted a few machines and have already tested this OS.

Yep, sounds like something Micro$oft would do. I got tired of their crap years ago and converted my machines to Linux. Everything is free. The operating system - free. You want an office suite with word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation package? Free. You want imaging software comparable to Adobe Photoshop? Free. You want software to convert videos and music? Free. Plus, there's a TON of stuff I can do on Linux that I simply can't do with Windoze. The only thing lacking is gaming support for those that might care for that type of thing.

The way Micro**** has gone about this conversion thing is disgusting.

They buried the installer in a critical update and it will keep popping up to "remind" you about how great windows 10 is.

It will even give you the option of installing "later..." By "later," they mean later that day or the next time you turn the damn machine on.

If you don't want that turd ****ing up your system and you are running win 7 or 8, you can use this:

http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/

It is called GWX control panel, and will allow you to turn the updates (and those idiotic pop-ups) off.

I'm not using win 10 on my home machine-no matter what.

Thank you. I did the upgrade and my wifi was shot. I was able to go back to 8.1 and the wifi corrected. Thanks for the info.

Sorry to hear. I have read a lot of folks losing wifi after the upgrade. In most cases it's the new Windows 10 driver for the wifi card has issues (maybe windows selects the wrong one), but going back to the previous driver before upgrading, restores wifi connectivity. That might have been the only thing you needed to do to fix that issues assuming all your system bios and windows 8.1 has latest updates but of course the latest updates can sometimes make things worse. It's like gambling :)

If you want to try the upgrade again in the future, copy the current win 8.1 device driver for that wifi card somewhere you can access after updating to Windows 10. Then after going through all the windows 10 upgrade reboots, go into Device Manager and configure the wifi card to use the same driver you had been using.

Exactly my point about Windows 10!

If we had any kind of acceptable os there would absolutely never be any reason to do that kind of BS.

I have had to mess with goddamned drivers in 15 years-why in hell do I want to start now?!

This was my last chance for Microsoft. I am absolutely done!

Yeah, seeing frequent comments over the past several months about wifi problems after upgrading made we wonder why MS decided to change drivers in Windows 10. If the previous version worked, and still work in Windows 10, why risk problems with messing with an updated wifi driver? That doesn't make sense to me. Just go the path of least probability of f'ing things up! Most people don't have the time and/or minimum technical knowledge to research these issues and diagnose what the hell is going on. I'm rapidly getting tired of dealing with this crap on each new windows version. I've got better things to do with my time.

I may have to try a Mac at some point in the future. I've always thought Apple was stupidly expensive in the past for what you got, but in recent years I know several people running Apple and Windows VMs on those boxes with little fuss. I just want it to work, and not have to diagnose problems!

I like some of the features of windows 10 butn there is a lot I don't like. First the interface is better and it appears to be organized. On the other hand it was designed to get as much of your personal information as possible. My rec...upgrade and then find a book or an expert who can show you how to keep microsoft out of your privacy.

Win 10 is being installed during updates. Turn updates off if you don't want it

Definitely DO NOT turn off updates.

Your machine will be owned by hackers about two days after patch Tuesday.

Lots and lots of important security patches come with those updates.

I have no choice on my work computers. Win ten shuts down my work software. At least until my provider catches up.
