GEN 3 was the first one with a rail, the newer GEN 4 has a rail as well. Here are two pics for reference, GEN3 on top, GEN4 on bottom(keep in mind the GEN4 has interchangeable back straps to fit a variety of hands)

IMO gen 3's have more comfortable grips than the gen 4, I've owned both and prefer the 3's. IMO of course.
