I have not heard that term used before. It is possible that it means an axe made for a particular merchandiser. An example would be Sears and Roebucks axe or other retailer, having an axe made with their own label on it. It was a common practice among hardware stores in the early to mid 1900s. The practice applied to products of a wide variety, from axes to firearms.

The axe I have has been called a contract axe.Is that the same as a trader axe,?I really appreciate your help as I know very little about vintage axes.I do however have a passion for old tools and love bringing them back to life.
