Looking for a youth hunting rifle, preferably in .243. Composite stock preferred but I would consider buying one with a wood stock. Looking to buy or trade - on the trade side I have a Highpoint CF-380 I'd be willing to trade for a youth rifle.

Also looking for recommendations - if I don't find a youth rifle to buy here then I'll go retail. I'm currently looking at a CVA break-action .243 from Academy. It's scoped and total cost is $229.

Thanks BIKER13 BIKER13 and Poppa Mike Poppa Mike - When you say "Buy the CVA and save money" are you saying it's well worth the cost and it would be a waste to buy a nicer rifle for kids? If so, that's what I was thinking as well.
Not saying it’s a waste, but for the money it cost it’s a good rifle for them to learn with. And in the worst case if the kid discovers hunting is not for them, then you’re not out a lot of money. A good friend of mine bought his son (age 8 at the time) a NEF break barrel .243 to learn to hunt with. Now that boy is in his early twenties and still likes to use it even though he has other, nicer rifles he can hunt with.

Just what poppa mike said. I bought a used NEF .223 on ODT a few years back. I admit it was fun to shoot and was very accurate for a budget rifle. I killed a couple deer and a few dozen sheets of paper before my grandsons got ahold of it. The boys have truly enjoyed it. My oldest daughter takes it hunting also. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to wait a day or two and see if I can find something in a private sale - if not I'll head to a local store and pickup a NEF/CVA or other variant. I appreciate all the feedback!
