So @Sleestax I’ve decided to agree with your opinion of refinishing in the maybe more historically correct finish. I’m going to go with Boiled Linseed Oil.

I have used BLO before to refinish the stock on my SBR 10/22 and really liked how it turned out! I’m going to use the same method that I have before when applying BLO.

Handguards were cleaned with degreaser and soapy water as much as possible, they were surplus but were in pretty good condition. I Let them dry fully.

Sanded both the upper and lower handguards with varying fine grit sand papers.

Cleaned off the dust and let dry

Applied first light coat of BLO rubbing it in deep and applying a lot of friction trying to generate a little warmth. Let the BLO sit for 30 minutes then wiped off any excess.
Allow to dry for at least 24 hours or as long as it takes.

After they dry, sand down with 0000 steel wool, clean the wood with a sticky tack cloth to remove and small steel fibers that may be left behind.

Apply second coat of BLO in the same fashion.

I’ve only applied 2 coats so far.

Handguards are like 20.00 for upper and lower so I’m just gonna have fun and maybe try to stain/finish a few sets for experience.

I haven’t refinished much wood so this may go south!
