The spacer approach is attractive for its simplicity. Would you just use a strip where the bracket mounts or add one of the top as well? There's still the problem of drilling through the tile for the lag bolts and it will be through the center of the tiles so if they crack it will be visible. Ho...

I need to fix my front door. Over 20 years some wood rot in the frame, and it's developed some gaps.
Beyond my skill set; would you repair or just replace the whole thing ? Had one guy suggest it'd be cheaper to replace and I've had real problems finding anyone to do this kind of repair work.
