This sounds like the arguments I hear verse 5.56 and the 7.62X51 or 7.62X39 and how 5.56 has no killing power, doesn't do any damage, have even had more then a few guys claim they can catch a 5.56 at X yardage with their bare hands, and I am sure they could, once, but have yet had anyone volunteer who has said that to stand at the 500 yard line with a catcher's mitt. Comes down to you don't want to get hit with any of them if you can help it because all can kill you just fine and with modern advances in bullet design and defensive loads the playing field has been evened out quite a bit from round to round, go back to FMJs only though then we can argue caliber choice, until then... Personally in a carry gun its whatever you are most comfortable and accurate with, caliber I believe is secondary to that and reliability of the platform, plenty of people are dead due to all of the rounds that have been listed so I really think the point is moot, 9mm is popular due to cheap practice ammo and lots of defensive loads, and while I don't care of .40S&W I don't see it going away any time soon.
I also happen to like the 10mm round, fun to shoot, very accurate, and recoil impulse, even with hot loads is less jarring due to the length of the cartridge compared to a .40 round in similar bullet weight. But if it comes down to a combat round I gravitate to 9mm or .45ACP because I am comfortable with them and have a lot of range time behind the round and guns then anything in .40.
As far as subguns H&K has chambered MP5s for .40 and 10mm and still manufactures sub guns in .40, the thing is most departments are going to 5.56 SBRs because of better terminal performance and subguns are really becoming a rarity except in special roles and even there they are losing ground to short barreled ARs more and more by the year.

my oh my I forgot what the point of this post was oh yeah .10mm that was it.....what did Sonny Crocket carry in MV?
mines used for a "woods gun". A little over zealous for self defense though.
