The accord trannys has always have problems and even today still have issues.You would think Honda would build a better tranny,and or less power of an engine so they will not tear up.
The year you speak of 98-02 has problems around 130-145k miles and if not been treated well with plenty of drain and refills they just don't last.I SUGGEST not getting a used one as they are all crap and most likely same miles as yours and hard to get a good one that will last long.Unless he is selling it and wants it to work now and cheaper go thru LKQ and they will give you a warranty enough to sale the car with.
If you want someone to rebuild it make sure these people only sticks with honda and acura trannys and not someone that does 90% GM and ford and you're the 4 % he ever does.If these people don't know about hondas and replace the parts that troubles these you will have another problem.
