22 ARC vs. 6 ARC vs. 6.5 Grendel vs. 6.8 SPC ll

Varmint/match bullets work well on deer in the 6.5 Grendel. My long (22”) 22arc was the opposite. It needs heavier tougher bullets due to the velocity/rpm.

The 6.8 SPC was the result of a special study to combine accuracy and killing power at combat distance...in an
AR-15 platform.
They found the wider broader bullets offered better killing power and the smaller diameter bullets offered better overall accuracy.
Some rounds are built around high velocity and others heavy grain projectiles.
A lot of people forget the hyper velocity small diameter rounds can be barrel burners and barrel life can be drastically reduced, especially in full auto applications.
Bullet design is also huge...the Russians like to keep it simple and build theirs so they are not reliant on velocity and expensive specialized copper blends.
Lots to be said for air pockets and fast deforming/destabilizing projectiles.
5.45x39 7n6 for example.
Also remember that the military has deep pockets (yours) and are less worried about ammo burning out barrels.
They just want their buddies to get the supply contracts.
I think the government would have been better served if they had redeveloped the 5.56 bullet way sooner than they have.
I like the 6.5 Grendel as a general purpose round.
Long distance, decent bullet construction for most applications.
Not a barrel burner for the most part.
I have shot all the calibers discussed in this thread and they are all good so pick your flavor but remember to add in :
Application~
Recreation, hunting or SHTF
Price~gun plus ammo
Platform Longevity~this is where the military style firearms pay off.
New and shiny gets you excited...buy a new toy every year.
I know a guy who only has a .308 rifles.
( Not counting his .22 LR and .357's)
He has multiple rifles for every task.
Hunting, SHTF, competition and collector pieces.
He doesn't feel under gunned for any task and I can verify he is very competent with any of his weapons.
He told me the drug interdiction task force likes .300 win mag in the old days for disabling out board motors...lol
I don't do shoot outs and am more likely only to shoot deer, hogs and coyotes.
Dammit, now I need a Rhodesian FAL for the animal uprising.
