.223 ammo for deer

I'm looking for straight head shot and neck shot! I take lung shots with my .308 and 30-06
Just think about it this way though. If you limit yourself to head and neck shots and the deer come through thick brush, that may be a shot your arent able to make due to stuff being in the way. It would suck to loose the buck of a lifetime due to toting a small caliber when you have something more powerful at the house. Just my way of thinking. Either way good luck this year.

I'm hunting over a food plot on the corner of a field, and another food plot in another field. I don't have any thick brush areas this year

Anyone use a 7.62x39? Thinking about using my AK this year with a 5 round mag.
Not trying to thanks the subject. Very interested to hearing answers for both. Would a varmint round work better with 556?
First deer I killed was with an sks many moons ago. Hp's take them down no problem.

Varmint rounds normally explode upon impact may or may not give the performance you want.....

We will not put any steel cases in any of our guns, that's our choice , everyone
else can do as they please but not for us..........

just a simple suggestion...

Looking into testing the federal fusion, federal vital shock, and Barnes vortex to see what groups the best I think

A lot of online bravado about head and neck shots. Just remember that blown off jaws and tracheotomys are a real possibility and the size of the vitals in the head and especially the neck are small and surrounded by a lot of non vital areas, it aint like you're shooting something you know absolutely wont move as you squeeze the trigger. After seeing some ugliness first hand and more than once I wont even take those shots period anymore. Many folks feel they owe the animal a better death than a blown off jaw or gun shot esophagus or trachea. Those that recommend that you just put a good bullet from enough gun in the boiler room are ethically dead on.

Killed 2 in the last 2 years, one at 65-70 yards dropped in its tracks, the other at 330 yards ran 60 yards and piled up with Hornady Superformance Match 75 grain hollow point. Granted the 330 yard shot was not the wisest choice, but I still recovered the deer. Also both were heart/lung shots.
