.223 ammo for deer

64 gr Winchester Power Point will do the job. But I only use them where over penetration is a concern and the deer need to be thinned. Other wise there are much better calibers for deer.
The 7.62X39 is a good choice. I have a supply of 154 grain soft point Russian ammo that puts them down clean.

Non hunter here. I'm from NJ. But I read about people hunting with a 357 revolver. That sounds like pushing the ethical envelope. I'd want a 30 caliber rifle something if I were ever going to hunt, but people use less than a 223. I have hog hunter 223 in my Colt SP1, (I like the Hog Hunter box) but I'm only gonna shoot 2 legged non edible critters with them.

PS: head shots would be very cool.

Barnes Vor-Tx 55 grain TSX. One deer out of 6 ran and it only made it about 30 yards. All deer were shoulder or neck shot. One high shoulder shot (75 yards away) with the 55 grain TSX dropped this buck in his tracks.

Barnes TTSX bullets are the ticket. The have great penetration and the wound channel is deadly. I would use this somewhere in the 70 gr. weight. Excellent expansion and 100 percent weight retention.

Anyone use a 7.62x39? Thinking about using my AK this year with a 5 round mag.
Not trying to thanks the subject. Very interested to hearing answers for both. Would a varmint round work better with 556?

75% of my hunting is done with an AK. I'm either using Federal Fusion or Wolf MC from a lot I purchased several years ago.

I'm seeing a lot of guys on different forums sayin federal fusion 62gr

Fusion 62 is what I use when I hunt with an AR, and it's been 100%. I didn't get a pic of the deer I shot last year with it, but it left a fist size exit hole. It was about a 50 yard shot, and the deer made it 10 yards at most. The most recent hog I shot dropped on the spot.
