30-30 drt loads

I have a great 150 grain plinking / armadillo load using plated bullets at around ¢20 a shot. Never tried spitzer points, but those fat little Nosler ballistic tips should work great at 30-30 velocities.

Deer loads?

I am not much of a hunter, but I do a lot of reloading for my 30-30.

I prefer the 170 flat nosed. The rubber nosed pointy bullets have a boat tail and therefore a reduced amount of powder capacity available to the point that the final load is not as powerfull as the standard 170 flat nosed bullets. Factory 150's are down loaded to match the factory 170's trajectory.

Use starting load and work up...test and look for pressure.

Marlin 336 about four years old I load: sierra #2010 170 grain, 29.0 of H322, WLR, range brass, cut to 2.029, OAL 2.540, I use a full lee factory crimp. Average 5 shot velocity was 2067 in 80 degrees. This was extremely accurate out of my rifle; 5 shots at .474" / 100yds

The 30 year old marlin I load: sierra #2020 125 grain, 30.0 H322, win brass, CTL 2.028, CCI 200, OAL 2.418, Average velocity 2232, 5 shot, 0.689" / 100 yds.

I have had plenty of opportunity to shoot deer, just nothing big enough yet. There is no doubt the 170 sierra and H322 would be the ticket out of my rifle.

I do it's a DRT load. Let me get my book, I don't remember it offhand.

OK: The best one is a Horandy Interlock 170 gr FP #3060, pushed with 30.2 gr of RL-15 with a COL of 2.530. and a CCI primer. Runs just about 1930 fps.

I also have another recipe I've hunted with, but at the range it didn't shoot as tight a group.
Same bullet, pushed with IMR 3031 27.5 gr and a CCI primer, same COL, shot almost exactly the same speed it just didn't group as small.

I've shot deer with both loads and a good shot will get you one hop, if not DRT.
I only make the ones with RL15 now, because of the group size difference.

Safety first, so I should tell you to start lighter and chrony them as well as check group sizes. Min Max for RL-15 is 27.6 to 30.6, for the 3031 it's 25.4 to 27.0.

I can see someone else answered up too, so you already have a couple proven choices.

I like to practice/ shoot for fun quite a bit with my hunting loads, and I use the 30-30 as my utility/ pest control/ plinker with plated bullets. The 500 may last 2 years. I like to load in bulk for consistency and to keep sights true.I am finishing up 600 flex tip projectiles and they give very little more in accuracy for me than flat points since open sights are the only way I shoot lever guns. I appreciate the feed back. It looks like 170's are the winner. Hopefully RL-15 has become available again.

I shoot a Savage 340 BOLT gun,so I can shoot pointy bullets.Gonna load some Sierra 150 grain Game kings in the 30/30 brass.Try them
