36v vs. 48v Golf Carts?

Thanks for the shout out. But sir, I’m no Nikolai Tesla.
However, I have been bit a few times by 110 when installing ceiling fans for my wife 👍
Ok, I'm, going to try on the endearing trailer park Garrison Keillor thing that letusbuyyourcar letusbuyyourcar does so well.

So it was 'round about 94 or 95 and I was working for this subcontractor. Part time, just making some spending money, right? Well this guy worked mainly with a rental company and the large majority of the work we did was prepping houses for new clients after the old had moved out. Painting, patching dry wall, replacing fixtures, etc.

Thing is, this guy was a one man bleeding heart army. He would hire homeless people and druggies as gophers and send them with us on jobs. He thought he was helping and since I was just working for the guy, I wasn't about to try and change his mind.

This particular day we are headed to this old lady's house where she wanted to replace the ceiling fan in her sunroom. She had called the day before and asked if we could replace it. She had redecorated and wanted a new one that matched. Long time client, land lord said do it. I had been to Ace Hardware the night before and gotten one so when I showed up for roll call at the office that morning I was ready to go.

That's when I met Richard. Older fella, in his late 50's or so. But it was hard to tell. What's the old saying about "it isn't the years, but it's the miles?" Dude had a lot on the clock. Stunk, bad fingernails, clothes looked like they hadn't been washed in longer than I'd been around. I got stuck with Richard for the day.

So I managed to hold my breath in the truck for the entire ride over to the lady's house. I put the fan box down in the sun room and ask Richard to unpack it. I wander off in search of the breaker box and find it - completely unlabeled. I decide best case scenario is for me to watch the fan and have Richard flip breakers until it turns off. So I send Richard to the breaker box and give him remarkably clear instructions on what I want him to do.

After a few minutes, we find the breaker. I tell him flip it back on. The fan comes on. I tell him to flip it off, the fan dies. I then tell him to stay right there and wait. I climb the ladder and unmount the fan to find out there are no wire nuts, so I'm going to have to cut it out of the ceiling. I yell back to Richard to make sure the breakers off. He responds with a gunt of some sort of the other and right as I squeeze the dikes to cut into the wires, the light in the fan comes on.

When I tell you I rode the lighting...I rode it straight down. Sparks rained down everywhere. I shot off the ladder like a bullet and landed on a nice wicker loveseat that I completely destroyed. I somehow managed to kick the ladder in the opposite direction of my flight and careened it into a buckboard that had a crystal liquor decanter and glasses on it, all of which ended up in the floor.

Richard came in to see what was wrong and by the time I was able to get up off the ground, I beat the absolute brakes off the man and, to this day, I still feel a little bad about it. He ran out the front door and I called the boss and told him what happened. He came over and helped me clean up. He also ended up paying for the damages.

As to the dikes. I still have them. Perfectly sized 14 gauge hole right the the middle of the cutters.

I'm rOmiLaYu. Thanks for coming to my TED talk. :nerd:

Yeah but they are 12v. Nicola Tesla back there said don't do it.
No idea why he was told that. You can do 8x6, 6x8, 4x12, 48 volt pack etc.
There are tons of YouTube videos on how to do the conversions, Facebook groups, etc.
With the price decreases and the added benefits, lithium is definitely the way to go if you need batteries.

The cart has an onboard charger. I guess I would need to figure out if it supports lithium charging.

It probably doesn't. Smart chargers are dirt cheap now though (less than $100).
But there may be another component that needs to be changed or added. Fortunately mine came already converted so I won't begin to try to steer you in the wrong direction. But there's definitely more info out on the interweb than you could ever imagine. It's definitely worth considering.

No free lunch..

..eight 6v batteries will carry you a longer distance than four 12v batteries, but add 200 pounds weight, (okay for 1 skinny person)

Six 8 volt batteries would be a happy medium between weight and distance :thumb:
The range for lithium is over 20 miles.
It's simply a different universe compared to lead.

No, there are eight six volt batteries. So you're saying that if I had four 12 volt batteries as opposed to eight 6v batteries it would hold a bigger charge?
8 6v batteries will give you the most stored energy. How old are the batteries? Are they all the same?
So far, die hard batteries from Sams club has been the best I've found short of switching to lithium.

The older buggies without the controllers or computers will always last longer, they just won't go as fast and the wires to the resistor will get hot and smoke on big hills.
