What is this "duty" that I see so often in connection with high end ARs? I'll see something like "a terrible choice for duty use" when someone mentions a lesser brand.
Seriously, LEOs and military (and professional shooters) are provided guns, what "duty" is performed by folks not in these categories?

That's all I do and what 99.9% of all other guys do with theirs also. However, this is a hobby to me and I like "cool stuff". The higher end stuff is cooler to me. A "duty use" rifle doesn't have to be expensive. A Colt 6920 is a $1000 gun. If your only criteria is that is shoots, by all means find the cheapest thing you can afford.
One my favorite ARs was a PSA rifle i built. Picking up a DTI this weekend. Never saw the need in dropping 2k on a gun that one for 600 will do the exact same thing. Now pistols are a different story.

Total $550 assembly is not as hard as you think and the end product allot better than a DPMS sportical.
If you want to splurge another 30 go for the moe build kit http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/moe-lower-build-kit-black.html trigger is ever so slightly smoother and rifle will look better with Magpul grip and stock.
Yeah but it's only good for "plinking". It doesn't matter how well it shot, how reliable it was or how well it held up. It's just a "plinker" and not to be trusted.
Now that's a decent duty rifle. Truth be told the "duty" rifles I inspected were basic mass produced rifles with iron sights, hand from one to another joe for years. Nothing fancy, did have a chrome bore which holds up to abuse a bit better. If it's dropping them in at 1.5" that's better than most can shoot them in the field.
