In all seriousness, I think it's a thin lacquer or shellac someone applied. It'll come right off with Acetone.

Once you get that finish cleaned off, try some cold blue to even out the finish. I've used Ginsboys "best cold blue method" on ak parts to even out the finish. It works great.
Will using the Brake Cleaner or Acetone force me to go through a re-bluing ?
It would be better, if you remove the wood furniture, so as not to damage the finish. And of course, re-oil everything.
Yep, you'll just be removing a layer on top of the original finish. Try it with a Q-Tip in a small place. You'll see.
Be sure to use outside, or in a well ventilated area. And eye protection, maybe nitrile gloves, also.
