advice needed: .22 for sons

HENRY lever action !!! They'll never out grow it and, in addition to shooting the .22 long rifle for target and in the woods, you can shoot the sub-sonic shorts in it for bck yd. varmits, very quiet. Smooth, reliable, sweet-sweet rifle and made in the USA.

I love my 10/22 but there is something to be said for a new shooter to learn on a bolt or lever (and making their shots counts) as well as ZZpop pounts out about more ammo choices.

If I were looking for a gun to pass along to my children I'd go for a CZ bolt action. No, it's not mall ninja-esque, but it's a classic that they will appreciate when they are grown. Just my two cents.

It needs a wooden stock so it can get scratches and dings...those are the way a gun helps to preserve memories.

I would say that this would be my selection also. Superior accuracy out of the box and like LSU was talking about, teaches them to make one shot count instead of "spray and pray" with a simi-auto. I got my kid a CZ Scout for his 6th birthday and he has proven his responsibility with the bolt gun and has moved up to a simi-auto within the past month. We're going to refurbish the Scout and make it a back up for either of us if we have any problems out of the Marlins, and it's just nice to have a choice on what ya want to use on a given morning.

Depending on your budget I'd start with a bolt gun and later move to a 10/22. If the budget won't allow, 10/22.

I have one I bought back in the '80's. Beautiful wood stock. Got the itch to make it a little more accurate and changed out the barrel with just two bolts and added a thumb hole stock. You could also go the bull pup route or something tactical looking.

With the heavy barrel mine will shoot dime size groups at 25yds if you do your part.
