ammo box wood stove

has anyone built a wood burning ammo can stove? i have a small cabin that i'd like to supplement with wood heat. Can also use pellets if that makes it easier for design

i'll take youtube links if they have been tried

I have a small cabin/shack
16x20 with a half loft

I’d love to have a wood heater but there’s just no way to fit in a chimney pipe

I use a freestanding cast iron propane heater that has the gas logs inside

The place is so small it stays plenty warm

roundhouse - mine is 16x16 with half loft. super insulated. I use a little buddy to take the edge off to start then electric space heaters.

I have a few of the tall ammo cans i can sacrifice for the cause. thought about making so it is long ways along the wall so it doesn't take up much space into the room.

Some home made heaters work good and some don’t

Depends on the design

I think the Ammo can metal might be too thin but I’ve seen heaters made from 55 gallon drums lines with fire brick

I have a Lopi Insert at my house and the metal is pretty thick and it’s lined with firebrick


I think Jotul and a couple other companies make some really small heaters

I like having the glass so I can see the flames

That’s why I got the cast iron propane heater at my cabin

I think it’s a Vermont Castings

Do you have direct sunlight hitting the cabin? You could build a small solar heating setup with basic materials and it won't take up any floor space up in your cabin. Doesn't even have to be a permanent fixture & can be put away during warmer months.
