Alright, ya'll don't beat up on me too bad for asking this...can ammo eventually get out dated to the point where it's no good? I was given several boxes of various 12 gauge shells and assorted rounds from my grandfather - he said most are 30 to 40 years old. I don't plan on shooting any of it -I want to keep them for display and such. Just curious if ammo can get too old.

Thanks

Shotgun shells (older shells especially) are more susceptible to moisture/humidity than bullets with metal cases.

If kept in a cool, temp. controlled environment ammo almost never goes bad.

I have some ammo for my mosin nagant that is probably from the late 50's-early 60's. Still shoots great. Ammunition wont really expire although it will eventually lose some of its power. Actually I seem to remember hearing about an accident at some civil war reenactment a few years ago. Somebody got hit by a musket ball that apparently came from an old rifle that had been left loaded for the last 140yrs. Don't know if this is an urban legend or not but it is entirely possible.
