Antique car

A nearly new custom ‘98 Sportster, only had about 1200 miles on it. The engine & drivetrain in the Mustang was so violent on launches it broke one of the motor mounts, was always blowing out the thermostat gasket and running 103 octane gas was getting expensive as hell in a car that only got about 5 mpg. I would’ve ended up either in jail or dead if I kept it, I just couldn’t keep my lead foot outta the gas in that car. I hit 2nd gear once showing out for a buddy and it went sideways twice before doing a 180 in the middle of the street. I was much safer on the motorcycle believe it or not. :becky: It was fun while I had it but my wife wouldn’t even get back in that Mustang after just one ride in it and she’s the one who wanted me to get a hotrod Mustang, I figured it was a good time to quit while I was still ahead and keep my son alive too. lol!
OK, so what was the drive train in that stang??

Knees in the breeze!!!

Ok, but I don’t remember ALL the internals. A 302 bored .040 over, big ass Crane Cam, flat top pistons, Edelbrock high rise manifold, high flow water pump & valve covers. Mickey Thompson heads, Holley 750 dual line, Hooker Headers, FlowMaster race mufflers (not really mufflers, lol) Griffin aluminum NASCAR radiator w/dual SPAL electric fans, MSD ignition, Ford Top Loader 4 speed w/Hurst shifter, custom made heavy duty drive shaft & U-joints, Ford 9” rear end w/Detroit Locker 3.90 gears.
One of my best friends (RIP Randy) who lived a mile from me told me he could hear me crank it up at night and hear me literally over two miles away pulling out from a stop sign and that wasn’t even getting on it hard! That was the loudest most violent sounding car I’ve ever had. I cranked it once in front of a restaurant when a couple of elderly women were coming out and one of em’ cussed me up one side and down the other for scaring her half to death. I must’ve apologized half a dozen times to that poor woman. Lol! I was at a red light once and a guy on the passenger side of a truck next to me leaned out with his phone and said “man you gotta hear this!” to whoever he was talking to, that little Stang was rockin’ back & forth every time that big cam turned over. It was probably louder than my Harley AND my Roadstar which were both running Vance & Hines straight pipes.
My hot rodding and motorcycle days are behind me now, even at almost 67 I will still lose my damn mind and act a fool if I’m in a fast car, I just can’t help myself. 😂 I’m very fortunate to have had a Dad who taught me how to drive in fast cars, I took my drivers test in a ‘70 Dodge Charger R/T 440 Magnum that was built by a NASCAR mechanic. Now THAT was a scary fast car, in January 1973 Dad had to take me from College Park to Hollywood Florida in 10 hours, he made it back in 8 hours because he had to get back to work. I have an old Polaroid picture of my Dad somewhere of him with one hand on the wheel and the other arm resting on the door with the cruise control set at 145 mph going down I-75 but I also saw him push it way past the 160 mark it had on the speedometer! He traded it for a ‘74 Formula 400 Firebird after I turned 16 though, got my first speeding ticket in that car going 113 in a 45 mph zone going to pick my Dad up at the Delta jet base. He was also a detective at Clayton County PD and knew I got the ticket before I even got to the jet base. 😂 Back then cops could get a ticket “fixed” so he saved me from losing my license. I thought I’d be grounded for life after that but he actually just laughed and only grounded me for a week! Best Dad EVER! Lol!

Good read. Yea it really doesn't take a lot of motor if you have it set up just right. Those Mopars are legendary. Too bad he sold that Mopar. I know all about loud cars. I had a 69 Cutlass that set off an alarm when I cranked it up.......LOL....I just laughed as I pulled away. I now have a 84 Monte Carlo I've heard plenty of times I heard you comin for a long ways. 434 pro racing engine. A good car does get the blood pumping. I'm glad you were able to give me the run down on your Mustang. I figured it had to have some low gears in it

As much as I love those cars remind me not to ride with you in that Monte Carlo, okay? It would only make me want another hot rod. 😂 I don’t have the willpower to not get on it any chance I get, it’s just too much fun! Same with motorcycles, it took a long long time to get fast cars and bikes mostly outta my system. My Dad always had fast cars and I saw the Hells Angels ride by about 300 deep in 1967. The feeling of just stompin’ the gas, dumpin’ the clutch and hittin’ the gears as hard and fast as you can is like nothing else and the sound & feeling of 300+ H-D’s running straight pipes and shaking the earth flying by gets in your blood. It got me at a young age, Dad used to take me to the 1/4 mile dirt track stock car races every weekend during racing season so there’s that too. 😂

I had a ‘68 Chevelle SS 396 in high school, that car almost got me in a world of trouble more than a few times. Lucky for me my Dad was a great teacher especially when it came to driving, I tried to be a good student. It ain’t always about speed and outrunning your opponent though, once back when I was first married we had a ‘74 Pinto. Long story short, I out drove and out foxed some jerk in a Celica GT and TWO city cops in that ugly little Pinto, just ask my wife she was with me. 😂 I had a friend with a built ‘56 Chevy when I was still dating my soon to be wife, him and his girlfriend and me and my wife were on a double date and he was letting me drive the car. I noticed somebody riding my ass so Randy said go ahead and put him in the dust so of course I was happy to oblige him and I went to 3rd gear and FLOORED IT! The guy tried to chase us but I was pulling away pretty good when all the sudden Randy’s girlfriend hollers WAIT! Stop the car, that’s my Daddy! 😳 Oh Chit! Yeah, I got my ass chewed good for driving like that with his daughter in the car. I think he was more pissed at me because I was out driving him and faster than he was, see he was a 1/4 dirt track racer and his rep was on the line if anybody found out some cocky 19 year old kid outran his ass in a car that wasn’t even mine.:pound:

Good times. I had a Honda Civic I did a lot of the same. It was a good while before I could afford a real car. Remember the 1968 movie The Italian Job? That was me.......Or rally racing......First muscle car I had was a 73 Mustang Mach I 351 Cleveland
