I'm starting this topic because I'd like to know what everyone carries as their primary hunting pistol for hunting not just back up.
Please do tell.

I'm thinking of changing up my options of my EDHC " every day hunting carry" pistol into something I could actually use to kill a deer with if I had to from a decent distance.
I trust my 1911 .45 but I don't trust it to take out a deer at 50 yards.

This scenario was playing through my head the other day while I was in a natural ground blind.
I was thinking in addition to my hunting rifle it would be awesome if I had a scoped pistol in case I needed to get off a quick shot that would be impossible to take with a rifle without giving myself away while swinging a rifle into position.
Either that or I'm just a gun whore looking for an accuse to get another pistol.........nah........everything I own has a special purpose.......I'm just inventing another purpose.

Rifle's faster than a scoped pistol. I can throw a rifle up and touch it off the instant it hits my shoulder. That'll work out to about 75 or so. When I hunted with a scoped revolver it took some time to line up and squeeze at that distance. Same with irons. A red dot might be faster but you still have to settle in. I guess at point shooting ranges it might work out, but I never tried that.

If you want faster than a rifle at short range, try a shotgun and buckshot.

You know it's funny man, I have had my heart set on a Ruger Redhawk for a few years now in 44 mag to start hunting with. I want the original Redhawk in stainless and by next year I'll have one and I'm going to hunt with it here soon. Dont know why but the gun has me spell bound. I'll put down the bow for just a short while and see if I can knock a few down.

Take me hunting and you can use my SS .44 in super blackhawk or my Black SS.454 super redhawk. Both with iron sights.

I have been pistol hunting since the late 80's and and in my opinion "quick" and pistol scope are difficult to find. Red dots are quick, open sights are quick but pistol scopes in my view are for Primary Pistol Hunting not back up and with the extended eye relief are a challenge to steady unless on a rest. Buy a Ruger or a Smith that you are confident will do the job as an every day carry hunting tool (44, 41, 454 etc) throw it in a quality leather holster and carry on with open sights. In your ground blind example this would have worked perfectly as far as your bare eyes can see. 75 yards and in. Handgun hunting is great fun. I squirrel, coon and rabbit hunted as a kid with a H&R and as an adult took many deer, coyotes and other misc critters with 357's and 44's. My current big gun is a 460 smith mag with burris scope. It's not fast. Lol

I just picked up a S&W 629-4 classic with a 4x32 Simmons Scope last week. I haven't been hunting with it yet but with the long eye relief, I can tell it's going to take a bit to get on target and rest it on the rail of my tree climber or a box stand to stabilize the shot.

Iron sights would be the way to go for quick target acquisition.
