My son got me a cool little throwing axe for Christmas. I tried a few throws with it this evening and can't get it to stick consistently. I'd like to get proficient with it. What's a reasonable distance and what are some tips for throwing?

Start at about 10 to 12 feet; strive for only one complete revolution of the ax. Definitely wrap the handle if you plan to throw a lot. Wet, flat leather wrapped tightly and left to dry would be my choice of warp material.

Competition throwers start at fifteen feet. You should get one full rotation on the throw. The top of the bit should be hitting the target.

Let the momentum of your arm motion take the axe from your hand. Try to take your wrist action as out of it as you can, avoid flicking.
