Anybody ever take steel targets to a WMA range?

Kicking around going to John’s Mountain WMA Saturday, but much prefer steel to paper. I have a store silhouette on 2x4 stand I was kicking around taking up there. I know the signs say you’re not supposed to, but anybody ever taken one without issue? I understand splash and bounce back and would put it at 25yds min for pistol and go ahead and run it out to the 100 when I was going to shoot rifles. Bad idea or nbd?
