****Atlanta Falcons**** And The NFL In General

Pass-catchers more than willing to join Matt Ryan for unscheduled workouts

"I think that's something that we do need to do," Ryan said. "For a long time, we had been a veteran team at those positions, whether it be at the tight end spot with Tony Gonzalez or wide receivers where we had veteran guys for a long time. I think we're young. We're young across the board.

"I think extra time put in together, whether it be here in Atlanta -- so many guys are here in the offseason, which is huge for us -- or whether it's getting together somewhere else and spending some time together and working together and trying to iron out some of the details and be a little bit more refined than we were this past season, I think that's a really good idea."

One of those younger receivers is Justin Hardy, who just completed his rookie season. Hardy showed flashes but still hasn't gotten a ton of work with Ryan after being inactive the first seven games of his first NFL season.

"Definitely I would," Hardy said of working out with Ryan. "Anytime you get a chance to work with your quarterback and get on the same page, then it becomes like second nature. Of course, I would be willing to go anywhere with him."

RESERVE/FUTURES DEALS: Wide receiver C.J. Goodwin (California, Pa.), running back Gus Johnson (Stephen F. Austin), offensive guard Collin Rahrig (Indiana) and quarterback Matt Simms (Tennessee) were signed to reserve/future deals as the Falcons start to fix their offseason roster. Rahrig is intriguing. He blocked for Tevin Coleman at Indiana. “I was real happy to see him,” Coleman said after Rahrig was signed. “He just snuck up on me. I was real surprised to see his face. That made me smile a little bit.” He was on the line that pave the way for Coleman’s 2,000-yard season. “He’s real good,” Coleman said. “He’s tough and he’s physical. He’ll go all the way until the whistle. That’s what I love about him.”

Here are 10 key offseason dates for the Falcons:

Jan. 30: The Senior Bowl. The Cowboys and Jaguars coaching staffs will coach the game in Mobile, Ala. The list of early invitees is pretty impressive.

Feb. 23-29: The NFL scouting combine will be held in Indianapolis. The Falcons will be mostly interested at the offensive and defensive linemen and any quick-twitch linebackers, who can stop the run, rush the passer and cover running backs or tight ends.

March 1: This is the deadline for teams to use their franchise or transition tag. The Falcons don’t have any obvious candidates for either tag this year.

March 7-9: Teams and start negotiating with agents of players who will become unrestricted free agents at the end of the league business year.

March 9: The new league year begins at 4 p.m. and the Falcons can sign free agents (Bruce Irvin, hint, hint) and trade players. Teams must also be under the salary cap.

March 20-23: The league meetings will be held in Boca Raton, Fla.

April 18: The Falcons and other NFL teams without first-year coaches are permitted to begin offseason workout programs.

Late April: The NFL will release its 2016 regular season schedule. Last season it was released on Tuesday, April 21.

April 28-30: The NFL draft will be held in Chicago for the second straight year. Remember the Falcons traded their sixth round pick and lost their fifth pick in the noise-gate scandal. The Falcons slated to pick 17th overall in the first round.

May 3: This is the deadline for teams to exercise their fifth-year options for 2013 first-round picks.
