My little 4x8 tractor was more than double what I assumed it would be. It was quite the 'education'. But I let mine free range so didn't need anything walk in.

Backyard Chicken Farmers

I would let them free range if I didnt have a hawk that is in the backyard everyday. I plan on letting them free range when someone is home.

You know, maybe I'm just really lucky but my backyard is FULL of hawks (beaver pond). I've never had a problem. I have two lazy fat pet beagles that occasionally patrol the yard so not sure if that helps but I'm still astonished that in the year plus I've had them, Zero issues with raptors even though there is not a single day that goes by I don't see multiple hawks.
Now I don't have bantam breeds so I assume that helps some.
do like i did and stick a webcam in the coop......i can check on the birds to make sure they all made it up on the roost at night and pan down to the nest boxes and see if i need to walk out there and collect eggs......if they're out in the run, i just look out the window and see them
Hawks? You mean like this one? So far they've gotten 3-4 of my chicks and only one adult when she was out free ranging. They actually land in the woods and then hop up to the edge of the woods and when the birds walk by the tree line the hawks jump out and grab the bird and drag them back into the woods. I've switched from small breed birds to larger more robust birds that at least deter the hawk from an easy meal. Luckily the hawks have been gone for the winter time but they should be back home here shortly.
