Best deer caliber?????

Shot placement is more important than cartridge. Best shot placement happens with the most practice. The only two cartridges most people are willing to pay for lots of practice ammo for are 223 and 308.
308 will do some things a 223 won't, but it's not as much as you'd thunk. However, more people own a 223 and don't have top quality optics mounted than have a 308. The scope is more important than the cartridge. 223 + alpha glass > 308 + beta glass.
You will kill a few more with the best deer scope than the best cartridge and without.

The best overall hunting caliber is a gun you practice with, shoot accurately, comfortably and be prepared for a follow up shot, bullet size doesn't matter your ability to put it in the right spot does.
I disagree. If you’re not using an appropriate cartridge, you could practice with a more effective cartridge. It’s a simple choice, one that tired old tropes don’t accurately explain.

For sure. But you do have to expect the unexpected too. The twig you didn't see, that blade of grass and so on
