Best Deer Hunting Cartridge

My rifles are more capable than I am but I try to practice a lot…. Varmint hunting helps. After becoming a cripple, the smaller cartridges are more appealing. I’ll take a rifle that I can put the bullet where I want over a canon. Animals can walk if I’m not confident with the shot.
That's it, make an ethical kill. The where, how or what isn't important

I used to hit one out to 150yrds with my 45colt Blackhawk running a 300 grn WFN. Now I use a scope and a tripod and can consistently hit a 2” target @220yrds.

Irons are a good skill but I’d say save it for the range or practice more. A pie plate might sound good but that’s a large margin for error. Once you add pressure/excitement and that’s a recipe for a wounded animal. I believe it’s a hunter’s responsibility to put the game down as quickly as possible and ego should stay at home. Just my opinion
Agree and impressive shooting

I grew up in Ohio but I’ve only shot a couple beyond 100yrds most were under 30yrds. The opportunities were there, I just didn’t want to carry them further than I had to. Lol

Right now I use my back porch as a hunting stand. They usually hang out by my targets I have at 130yrds. Used a 6.5G last year and both does dropped on the spot.
I like that kind of hunting

It was a deer camp challenge. DJD

Trying to remember. With a muzzle loader @ 100yds open sights. With a handgun @ 35yds open sights. I'll always use my rifle before my pistol. But I've been capable of farther. I guess my longest shot was 225yds with a 35 Marlin. One shot. I've taken plenty between 100 and 200yds. Open sights 135yds with a 45 Colt Marlin. One shot. It's an interior road where I sit in a curve. I have 140+yds on one side and 225yds on the other. There was another where I shot a good buck @ 80yds out. He ran to the other end of the field and all I could see was the top of his back and head. He was @ 125yds away. I said right about there and shot him again. He trotted off out of sight. When I found him both bullet holes were @ 1" apart. the first round killed him, he just didn't know it.

There’s nothing wrong with that.

As a kid I remember hunting with a couple guys my dad worked with once. One of them brags about hitting a doe in the head at a dead run 85yrds away. What he leaves out is that he was shooting at a buck that was ~35yrds away. The other one refused to sight in his shotgun because slugs were too expensive….. he went through 4 or 5 boxes of slugs before he got a deer. We went back to hunting on our own after that.
