I would love that some day but at this point I need something that will be reliable and probably more modern/comfortable.
From someone who has evidently never driven one
I don't care for the looks of the third gen NC models where they tried to give them a more aggressive look. The first gen NA models have more of a classic look with the flip up headlights and have probably bottomed out on prices. Will probably be more collectible. The 2nd gen NB models have a little more power but were heavier. Different look with the exposed headlights. Depends on what body style you like. If you get a 2nd gen I would go for the 02-05 with the VVT engine.

3 series coupe is a serious consideration. Are BMW's more reasonable on maintenance/ reliability? I can do a lot myself but not the really serious stuff.
Not a hard top convertible.. A convertible with an added hardtop, big difference
Have had that car for 30 years and did a full restoration on it myself. That car is going nowhere
the 3.9 is actually quite quick just not much of a handler
