Sound-proofing a range is a problem ... even with surrounding poured concrete walls, the "ceiling" will leak enough sound to be a real problem unless mass is added to it as well.
Years of experience speaking when I say that while foam will absorb (muffle) sound, mass is what stops transmission of sound.
Consider how you "hear" or "feel" that D*MNED "boom box" in the "low-rider" sitting beside you at the red-light! You don't "hear" the music ..
but you certainly hear / feel the beat!
