Buying laptop help

I like one that doesn't get burning hot.

Now how you do that....
I have noticed the amd processors get hot. Otherwise I look for the best battery life and a newer slower processor.
That may or may not be the right answer.

I have a i3 and an i7. The i5 Dell seems like a good suggestion to me.

Whatever you do get something with an "SSD hard drive" I have seen a couple in the 500-600 range with the SSD and its well worth it.

if budget is tight and she just does webstuff, you can look at chromebooks their a lot cheaper for the basic ones.

My Lenovo just crapped out. Just wore out, not really an issue with the computer.

purchased a Dell refurb, SSD, 2 yr. warranty,

Anxiously waiting for the brown package car to show up.

Brand doesn't matter a ton. Look at reviews on individual models. Microcenter will price match online if you like something you see in person. i5 or i7 as mentioned, but a newer i3 is a great budget processor...8-16g ram, SSD is a must. Asus makes great laptops. Steer away from a dedicated GPU...won't need it unless you are gaming. Have worked in IT mainly hardware and software support for 20 years.
