CFE BLACK

CFE BLK has remained in stock somewhere most of the last 2+yrs. It's still "comparatively" cheap, and a little works wonders. That being said I won't be getting any, until I can have it in my hands for $30lb or less.

I for one think CFE BLK is a very magical powder! I run it exclusively in 2 - 300 HAM'R ARs. I originally built them to run W296, because it was cheap and I liked the velocities that QuickLoad said I could get with it.. Wilson Combat built the HAM'Rs with Supersonic ONLY in mind and a Mid length gas system.. So I had to go with ultralight buffers/clipped light springs and adjustable gas blocks. Not nearly the same amount of gas that CFE BLK produces..

I've loaded both supers and subs for friends using CFE BLK in 300blk and it functioned flawlessly with the pistol & carbine length systems. Desired accuracy and velocities were achieved. Some bullets with the BLKs fast twist rate (mostly w/supers) can get finicky..

My real experience however changed on Christmas day last year, I crammed some 300 HAM'R cases full (115%) under a 155gr Nosler Custom Competition and achieved unreal results. I've read Bill Wilson stating on the Texas Hunting Forum (300 HAM'R Thread) about varying LOT #'s of CFE BLK will result in Bulk powders that produce less pressure and Less bulky lots that will produce more.. I found some of the best lots listed and blended them together to make one big batch of kick ass.

*The numbers next to charge weights are from QL, with extensive testing and tuning I'm starting to see actual velocities closer to what it predicts.. The supposed predicted pressure is still ridiculous, something like 105,000psi on the max.. 💣 *

This is from 16.2" barrels! I'm currently working on making about 3k new brass.. as many of my original 1,600 pieces have been lost or shot and reloaded 4 or more times now.. So yeah there were some popped out primers due to the pockets being loose already.. But nothing crazy like pierced primers or case head separations.

Everyone over on the TexasHuntingForum is now making HAM'R bolt guns, out of :puke:Ruger Ranch Rifles! So I ordered a custom throated 24" 1:11"T McGowen barrel that I'm going to send out to cryo treatment.. It is being built on a Remington 783 in .243 WIN, Armslist Waukesha, WI $340 in hand. A new .223 bolt head and go gauge is all I needed, same sort of barrel nut system as a Savage. It'll be in a Oryx chassis with polymer lined metal mags that allow seating out to 2.5" I'm hoping to hit almost 2,600 with a Speer 165gr BTSP @ 2.463" Claimed .52 G1 BC if remotely true it'll ring steel @ 1,000yd. Yep, I'm still pontificating..

I say give CFE BLK a try, you won't be disappointed! Supers or Subs. If you use QuickLoad, (or anyone reading this) DON'T believe the pressure numbers or even the velocities it spits out for it.. QuickLoad can't calculate all that magic! 🧙‍♂️

If you decided to get some. I'd say get a general idea of how much you intend to use and try to buy the same lot.. If you just want a taste before getting more, you can always blend the lots. Happy and Safe BLK Magic Loading.
Tks good to hear from you.Have a good Christmas. Tom

I'm working on some .300BO subsonics loads with CFE BLK now. It is a good powder overall, but it's dirty as hell. I mean 300BO subsonic suppressed is a dirty venture regardless but CFE BLK seems to be extra filthy.

I'm still working on load development and it is my first time trying to develop subsonic loads with CFE BLK but the I have been unimpressed with my E/S and SD numbers thus far. I'm still working to find the sweet spot, at or near 1050fps.

h110. just sayin'
I shoot quite a bit of 500 S&W and h110 used to be all I shot. CFE blk is a VERY different powder. …in this cartridge anyway.

Look at the very narrow window for a 500 grain bullet with h110

And CFE blk

Another thing to note is the stellar velocity that is achievable with CFE BLK. Also look at the High 110 charge and the low BLK. 15,200psi for 38 additional fps. on the H110. I still really like H110/W296 for magnums and economical loads.. Hell, I even did up a bunch of cast bullet Fire breathing W296 loads, in 9x25 Dillon for fun. at night cool..

Do you have the data for your shot groups, twist rate and velocities. Much appreciated. Thank you.
