Several reports, in the Navy Times too.

The police aren't talking about how they shot the (per FBI) "homegrown extremist".

According to reporting from The New York Times, some of the Marines killed in the Chattanooga shooting were killed trying to draw the gunman’s fire away from another, larger group of innocent bystanders.

“Some of the Marines who were shot to death last week in Chattanooga, Tenn., effectively sacrificed themselves to save the lives of others, diverting the gunman away from a larger group of potential victims, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation into the killings,”

The gov does not have our safety in mind

Literally any other country other than the US has armed military guarding military bases and buildings

Hell, private security works the gates most of the time

I'm reminded of the 80's and early 90's. Military bases which were all overseas had armed people everywhere. Most times with German Shephards too. I don't understand why we can allow our guys and gals to arm themselves ( the idiot that shot himself in the leg notwithstanding)

CONUS bases have both MPs and DoD cops manning the gates, all armed. What you can't do is put an armed 24/7 guard on every single recruiters office and NG or Reserves installation and office, etc. Just isn't possible and still get anything else done. The only practical option would be to consolidate everything into fewer installations and then fortify them. But then other problems will pop up, recruiting will suffer, NG armory coverage and disaster preparations (already gutting because of force reductions) will get even worse. Plus it would turn those into FOBs. Do we really want to go there? Here? Are we really that scared?

The event in TN sucks, just like all of these things do, but you can't run and hide. Your odds of getting killed commuting to work are much higher than ever getting killed by a terrorist, but yet we all do it every day. Suck it up and move on. And carry. ;)

My auxillary building we shared with the 335th had no guards what so ever, it had gated codes and a freaking armory, but no armed guards posted

Sounds crazy, get someone at the buildibg to pull security detail should not be hard. One nco and one regular enlisted with m16 at gate is all you need

The security is a joke
