Commercial Flight Collides with Helicopter Over Potomac

God bless the crews on both flights, passengers and their families on the ground and all the first responders working in these rough conditions.

FOX5 WDC is showing flag draped bodies being taken away in ambulances.

Watching the video on FOX looks like the CRJ was on final and the H-60 flew into them from the right side.
Crew Chief and Co-Pilot dropped the ball here. Whoever isn’t on the stick and the crew chief should have been eyes open looking for fast movers in that lane. I would guess this was a very experienced crew on The Blackhawk, had flown this flight several times, and lost awareness in their head “because we got this” - I would guess they became distracted by small talk, boredom for the enlisted guy( helicopter crewman are few and far between relatively speaking and they get ran into the ground) or just lost focus. It is sad but that is the job. It is extremely dangerous at all times and you have to be frosty at all times.

I am unfamiliar with all the accident avoidance and radar capabilities?

How many people are actually over watching both military and commercial flights? Are they well connected and synced?

Yes, in the end, at almost every level, I would expect a helicopter crew to be very vigilant. Especially in an urban area.

At what altitude were both these aircraft when the struck?

For the life of me after watching the crash 20-30 times, I’m perplexed trying to understand why the helicopter flying obviously at nearly the same altitude, that it did not see the super bright lights from the airliner.
Helicopter seemed to be flying at high speed. Helicopter was contacted by air traffic control about the commercial jet.
Maybe the Black Box from airliner will provide clues.
Don’t know if military Blackhawk’s have something similar.
God bless the victims and prayer to families and friends of the victims!

The Blackhawk crew lost situational awareness. Fast movers have the right of way. They flew right into him. Co-pilot and Crew Chief failed miserably.
Pilot on the stick would be glued to the gauges.
I have 1300 flight hours as a crew chief in Sikorsky Helo’s - **** happens.
