Complete newbie wanting an AR and needing advice

I've only shot an AR once, but am now interested in buying one. I don't do a lot of customization so buying a complete setup would probably be best. It'll mostly be for target practice and for home defense. Can I get some suggestions on which manufacturers to look into? Any specific models to look at?

Lots, of options based on budget, tho an AR in 5.56 is probably not the best choice for home defense, but that's my opinion.

Sorry, I guess I should have given more information . My limit is probably $1000 at this point. As for options, I apologize but I'm not really sure what options there are. I just want something that is reliable and easy to maintain.

Paisa777 is codeword for ATF undercover......j/k welcome. Get one while there cheap! And go kiss as well. You don't need any of that fancy stuff! But 5.56 probably ain't best for home defense. But what do I know I don't own any guns

get a Ruger, good entry level AR and you can add an optical sight later should you choose to do so.

Oops. Forgot to add: Don't buy some hacked up Lego gun for $700 - $1,000 listed here unless you know exactly what you are buying.
