Coyote at close range?

How much does one of your air set ups run? What would you recommend on a budget?
Im running a FX impact M4 with extras and it's pricey with everything around $4K, A lot of great options out there in the $1k range with good accuracy. Definitely want utilize the heavy slugs to get the job done. I use mine weekly and need 100% accuracy so I can justify the cost for my services.

I met a dude on here that also uses air guns to dispatch nuisance animals. He also spoke of 2-4K $ set ups for work.

No firearms in a neighborhood. All it takes is one Karen to fling mud and your buddy's then dealing with the law.

Tell him to look at PCP Air Rifles. They make them up to .50 cal and are used to hunt—even large game. These aren't your grandpa's pellet guns. They pack a punch and there's quite a few pellet/slug options out there.

Not a firearm and are usually way quieter than a firearm.
Check this guy's channel out. They have a lot of firearm restrictions in South Africa but air guns are accepted.

There are colibri and also super colibri. I don't know the stats on either, but we shoot the supers out of rifles. They won't cycle in my CMMG AR, but CCI quiets will.

As he wishing to make a purchase, this job clearly requires a Winchester 52 in the 28" barrel. Compare your 22 target ammo to a single buckshot for interesting interest.
Funny you mention the 52. About to sell a Browning 52. Maybe I’ll see if he wants it.

I shoot a lot of CCI. Usually a lot of standard velocity (just got 4 more bricks) but just got 6 boxes of subsonic segmented hp. Have a bunch of quiets and semi auto quiets. I’ve got other high end 22lr but hard to beat the price and availability of CCI SV.

Since we have been talking about a variety of 22lr ammo here is info I’ve collected over the past few years.

I've posted this before in other threads but might be helpful here. I did a bunch of research into 22lr when I was getting my first can (bought a Dead Air Mask, IMHO it's very easy to clean (main selling point to me in a 22lr can), and has minimal first round pop (FRP)). My go to ammo is usually Federal AutoMatch (bulk 325 packs from Walmart for $21) in my pistols, CCI Standard Velocity, CCI Quiet (for bolt action), CCI Quiet Semi Auto (for semi auto pistols and rifles but harder to find so I don't shoot it very often). Super Colibri is what I shot a lot in some bolt guns before I got my can.

Might revisit as I look more at accuracy in the future, but for now it's hard to go wrong with any of the above.

Here is the info I have found over the past couple of years of rimfire use and now with cans

CCI Standard #0032 1070 fps 40 grain bullet

CCI Quiet #960 710 fps 40 gr bullet - great round for the least amount of noise. Ideal for bolt action rifles or single shots. will not cycle semi auto rifles or pistols.

CCI Quiet Semi Auto #975CC 835 fps 45gr bullet - similar to Quiet but with a bit more power so that it will cycle most semi auto pistols and rifles

CCI Suppressor #0957 970 fps 45 gr bullet

CCI Clean 22 Subsonic #934CC 1070 fps 40 gr bullet (same as the CCI standard but with a blue coated bullet for less cleaning- there's also a red coated version that's high velocity)

CCI Segmented Hollow Point #0074 1050 fps, 40gr segmented HP bullet

CCI Subsonic HP #0056 1050 fps, 40gr HP bullet

CCI Quiet-22 Segmented HP #0970 710 fps, 40gr segmented HP bullet- same as Quiet above but HP for hunting

CCI Green Tag #0033 1070fps, 40gr lead bullet, target ammunition

Aguilla-

Colibri 1B222337 420fps, 20gr lead bullet (the "standard" Colibiri is designed for pistols- if you shoot it in rifles, make sure each round cleans the barrel so you don't have any obstructions)

Super Colibri 1B222339 590 fps, 20gr lead bullet (Super Colibiri is designed for rifles- more powder makes sure the bullet exits the longer barrels)

Colibri rounds- if you shoot them a lot, clean your chamber before you switch back to LR rounds. I've had issues with carbon ring in my daughters Rascal after shooting a lot of Colibri and not being able to chamber standard 22lr

SSS Sniper Subsonic 1B222112 (50 round) 950 fps, 60gr. Be careful using this with suppressors. I've not shot it but watch your twist rate on barrels, the 60gr bullet will tumble causing baffle strikes in some rifles/pistols. They recommend a 1:7 or 1:9 twist rate for these. Some folks have no issues, but some do. Try without a can first!

Remington Subsonic 21150 (50 rounds) 1050 fps, 38gr HP

Winchester M22 Subsonic S22LRTSUP 1090 fps, 45gr

Norma Subsonic 240065 (50 round) 1017fpg, 40gr HP

Eley Subsonic A05400 (50 round) 1040fps, 38gr HP

Federal AutoMatch 40gr LRN 1200fps (the bulk 325 packs you find a many stores)

Lastly if you are shooting thru a pistol or rifle (SBR) with a 4.5" barrel or less, most of the standard bulk ammo (1100-1200fps, I shoot a lot of Federal Automatch) will stay subsonic depending upon elevation and temps. The speed of sound varies depending upon the temps and elevation. Sea level at 75 degrees F speed of sound is 1122fps. The speed of sound goes down as elevation goes up and temps go down. Cold weather your shot may break the sound barrier when it didn't in the hot summer here.

Colibris aren’t even going 700 fps @ 20 grain? What rifle are you shooting them out of? They can’t even make it out of microgroove barrels.
At the muzzle it's 420 fps with 8 ft\LB energy,, have shot them in a 2x4, they go in about 3\4", they are quiet but I wouldn't shot anything but a iguana with it.

I had a Romanian trainer 22, and I used them to bring down the destructive squirrel population years ago. If a squirrel was too far away, I would maim them. Cb longs inside of 20-25 yards handled them. So how does some dude on here claim to hit a deer a couple of times with double lung shots?

Friend from out of state has a coyote problem. Lives in a neighborhood, neighbors are fine with him getting rid of them. Any shooting would be close range (sub 40 yards and more than likely 15-20 yards). Obviously he would be cognizant of backstop but he’s got video of them on his basketball court and one was snooping around when his daughter took the dog out before bed last week.

I was thinking a good 22lr with appropriate bullet should get the job done or thought to lend him one of my 22 Hornets. But those that have shot Coyote will a good 22lr do the job at close range? Head shot only? Any subsonic ammo that would work or HV stuff only?

Or go with 22 mag/17hmr? Or I had been thinking quiet and a 300 blackout with heavy subs (maker bullets)?
I dealt with the same situation for years. Shot a bunch of 'em.
My experience. I really wanted my various .22lr's to be adequate. And I gave them way more chances than I should have. Now to be fair, I was almost always shooting further than 20 yards. But always within 75. Most around 50. I only recovered ONE single yote shot with a .22 under those conditions and that one was about 20 yards, young one, I accidentally spined. He required a finisher.
A .22lr is a LOT louder than you'd think in a quiet neighborhood. A semi is a lot louder than a bolt or lever. You will also clearly notice a difference in sub and supersonic ammo. There is WORLD of difference in effectiveness in a .22,wmr and a .22lr on coyote. Also a world of difference in noise. In a suburban setting, noise for me, seemed amplified and loudness differences exaggerated.
I'd never shoot a coyote with Colibris. Not only due to lack of energy, they were unbelievably inaccurate for me.
If I had integrally suppressed large caliber air rifle money, that's exactly what I'd use.
(I may wind up with one one day ...)
