Diesel exhaust fluid

If anyone heard anything about a shortage of diesel exhaust fluid that could cause shutdowns of the trucking industry in the United States?

Yeah. It's been a topic or a few months now. I think someone has come up with a replacement that will still allow the trucks to run. But not 100% sure about that.

Urea is used in DEF and Russia is a major exporter of fertilizer used in DEF. Specifically to China, which is the major exporter of DEF.

1/3 of the trucking industry falls under the EPA rules requiring DEF. Which is any diesel truck post 2010. DEF is is a mixture of 32.5% Ammonia and the rest is Distilled water. So one could technically make their own. Truckers have used Windshield washer fluid that contains ammonia until they can get some DEF.

If there's not enough fluid, the NOX sensor detects the amount of NOX being released and puts the truck in Limp Mode. I'm wondering if there's a way to bypass the sensor?

Well, killed my Mercedes diesel SUV after it quit using the DEF. Silly me thought great, no more $15 boxes of 2.5 gallon def. But no, that killed the DPF filter and the rest of the emission system.

Urea is a technical word for piss. Most is synthetic, but it’s still just piss.
