Does cerakote depreciate a guns value??

Haha, yea pretty much what happened. I didnt trust him to fix it so I took to another gunsmith and told him I didnt want it back til it was a semi-auto only again. Took him a few days to figure it out, but he got it fixed.

MaconGuns , On a serious note when you find a good applicator the point about cerakote affecting performance is null. I have had alpha and omega arms cerakote a custom gun he built me (posted on this thread), GA precision with their GAP crusader, and then 5 guns by fatalbert. What you’re talking about isn’t a cerakote problem you’re talking about QA/QC which affects every firearm. Heck cmshoot has a thread about an issue with Daniel Defense. Does that mean DD is a bad firearms company? Of course not. It’s just one bad gun out of thousands of fine tuned machines they’ve created. Also, don’t take my post as being negative, you bring up some great points, and give great alternatives/examples.

Agree with you on finding a guy that knows what he's doing. Problem with doing any work not directly from the factory will usually void a warranty if you have one and may cost you extra to get it fixed if done improperly.
It could also damage your gun or create an issue when you need it. As someone else stated earlier. I've adopted the philosophy of keeping it as close to factory as possible. The reason I pay a bit extra for a Legion that comes with everything I want and I have no need to turn a $400 gun into a $1200 gun like some Glock guys. ( I love hating on Glock even though I own 2 ).

Really I and others have almost derailed from the general question. For me, any gun thats been coated by a dealer rather than the factory has lost a significant amount of value for me. I've no way of knowing if its covering up a flaw, if its a refurbished police trade, If the coating was done correctly and heck, I might not like Coyote Puke Tan color on my gun.

Recently a guy was charged with owning a firearm with a destroyed serial number. You all may know him as FPS Russia on Youtube. He is not Russian at all and, in fact, he lives here in GA. With some legally questionable videos he posted and in the midst of a murder controversy, a warrant was issued and his home was raided.

Among dozens of other charges, he was charged with:
1. Tampering with firearm serial number (charge dismissed because there was no proof he personally did it)
2. Owning a firearm with a destroyed serial number (guilty)

What happened is the he bought it from a gun shop and, before picking it up, had it sent off for cerakote. The serial was not removed it was just partially painted over with cerakote. So when you get any firearm painted, ensure the serial is in it's factory state because the ATF considers any changes illegal.

I've had a few guns Cerakoted. One was a Benelli SBE I that was black originally. I put camo cloth tape on it for turkey season. When I removed the tape after season I found a rusted mess. I had it actually hydro dipped in either Real Tree or Mossy oak, which ever was the camo at the time that Benelli didn't offer. When I sold it I actually made money on it. So theoretically. No it doesn't hurt the value. But on the other hand how many cheap military war bring back 1911's were polished to death and hard chromed back in the 1960-70s that are now looked at like WTF were you thinking? So Cerakoting a gun that one day maybe a collectors item in the future may hurt the value. Whodathunk a $69 SKS from the late 80's would be worth what they bring now? Same for the hardware store barrels of 1903's, K98's and SPESCO $17 1911A1s.

What are everyone’s thoughts on this? I have a 50AE Desert Eagle XIX that I’ve been thinking about cerakoting. Would this dramatically hurt my value? Feel free to tell me if this is a ridiculous idea lol

Cerakote is a factory option on Desert Eagles so it's not a ridiculous idea at all. Obviously coating it zombie green or prison pink is gonna limit it's resale potential. But who knows really, looking at this link the cerakoted Bronze and Tungsten retail for a little over $100 more than the standard black oxide finish. And that ugly ass white battleworn cerakote one retails for over $300 more than the standard finish

So it's hard to say on value, it depends on what you do, but ultimately you should worry about what you like and not anyone else.

I will say the standard black oxide finish is garbage. Here is just one example I've seen, this one was only 5 weeks after the customer bought it. So I would definitely say cerakote not only increased the value of his gun, but it's now protecting the metal from corrosion unlike the standard finish.

I've done a few others in different two tone themes. For me personally I think the Eagles are perfect candidates for cerakote. I like the simple two tone look where you match the frame and barrel and do the slide a nice contrasting color.

you're living on the edge man! Some of these post crack me up.
As you know, cerakote doesn't cover up or hide the serial numbers

And if it did those numbers were not engraved deep enough per ATF specs so the gun wasn't legal in that regard anyway. That or someone tried really really hard to spray it too thick.

It's good until it begins to chip

If cerakote chips it wasn't applied right. I guarantee all my work not to chip. Like any finish, it will scratch and get holster wear, but properly applied cerakote won't chip.
