Electrical wiring help

I’m at my in laws, & they’d like a dimmer switch replaced. The wiring box has:

1.) white, black, ground
2.) white, black, red, ground

My Leviton dimmer switch has:

1.) black, black, ground

The instructions don’t indicate how to handle a 3 wire/2 wire installation.

I’m trying to figure out what to do with the red, & found this:

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a multi switch circuit and a single pole switch

My thoughts also, but they say there’s no other switch. Pics to follow.

1. That red wire may be for a ceiling fan install so you can have separate switches for the light and fan.
2. It could be for a 3-way circuit.
3. For downstream independent circuit.

Edit: just saw where you said no other switches so probably pre-wired for ceiling fan.

Odd "dimmer" is a 4-wire?

Pretty sure those whites should be tied together there. Ate you on the feed end or the fixture end of that run?
