Father shoots 17 year old daughters BF in her bed. She told dad she didn't know him.

The father over reacted unless he had a reasonable belief that his life was in imminent danger.

FTFY

Don't move means don't ****ing move. It does not mean reach for your pants, wallet, pillow, or anything else. Don't move.

When Daddy is standing over you with a pistol in his hand and asks you a question, answer honestly.

Of course, that's exactly how you come to the conclusion that your life is in imminent danger. That is, unless the guy said "I'm going to ****ing kill you".

What if the kid in the bed were armed, and he knew he was guilty of nothing more that a little game of hide the weenie. The father comes in, draws a gun on him....can the kid defend himself with deadly force?

Interesting. Given the information he had at the time, he surely thought he was legally allowed to be there considering he was invited by an occupant of the home.

But for the fact that he was in the house without the permission of the home-owner, he would not have been shot.

When I was a kid I went over to my friend's house regularly without specifically being invited by the person with their name on the deed. Was I trespassing? Should I have been killed? Was I there illegally?

Put yourself in the homeowner's position. What did he believe at the time he fired?

i have no idea what he believed

given the "evidence" based on the article and what not it sounds like he didnt know who this fella was and didnt do anything illegal.

So the benefit of the doubt only goes one way, eh?

Someone is in your house at 2am having sex with your daughter. She says she does not know him. You tell him at gun point not to move and that 911 has been called. He reaches for something.

How much "benefit of the doubt" do you give him considering "action vs. reaction" time, proximity, threat to others?

To use your very well thought out, and insightful quote: "Depends on the circumstances as well".
