Looks like he did his best to keep the guy away from him till it was no longer possible. Mess with the bull you get the horns.
In an ideal world the clerk or shooter would have locked the door when the raging cajun walked to his car.

Absolutely justified. While carrying, the moment someone makes things physical with you, there is a gun involved. Your gun can be used against you, thus the situation has instantly escalated to your life being in danger. Attempting to get a plate number also sounds reasonable in my book, so no fault there.
